In 1906, the first commercial ice house operation on Lake Maxinkuckee, opened in the early 1880s by Sterling Holt of the Indianapolis Ice Co., burned to the ground. These shots were taken from across the lake at Culver Military Academy by a cadet. The ice house was located in the depression near South Street and Wabash, south side of Culver.
My great-grandfather, George Washington Davis (1860-1940) was superintendent of the ice plant. An article on the file was published in the Culver Citizen, on June 14, 1906 (see https://www.newspapers.com/clip/5676072/ice_plant_fire_george_davis/ ).
